Taekwondo a Korean form of self defence is practised by millions
of people worldwide.
This popular martial art has proven beneficial for students of all ages and
regular training can help increase self discipline strength stamina flexibility
and agility as well as learning practical self defence skills.
Although people of all ages practice Taekwondo, many call it "the children's
martial art" because it is so popular with children and although training
can provide the many physical benefits as mentioned earlier the study of Taekwondo
can positively affect a childs character by developing and increasing his/her
confidence to handle such situations as problems with bullying, study habits,
poor attitude problems and peer pressures.
Taekwondo for children is a fun safe system of self-improvement and personal development that has over the years been highly recommended by parents, physicians, and educators a typical class will be one hour in duration and during this time the emphasis is on helping children build themselves physically, and instilling character, self-esteem, effort, concentration, focus, respect, self-control, and etiquette a class can be based around any of the following disciplines.
Line Drills
Line drills are moves or techniques done while moving up and down the training
hall.
The instructor "calls out" the moves and the class immediately performs
them. Line drills help develop techniques and build strength and stamina. Line
drills help to develop discipline, since students must remain focused to correctly
respond to the given commands.
Pattern Training A pattern is a series of fundamental movements, both offensive and defensive, performed against an imaginary opponent.
The patterns in Taekwondo are choreographed sets of movements that encompass many of Taekwondo's techniques. Patterns are the basic building blocks of Taekwondo. they teach the various stances and attacking and blocking techniques, and also teach how to move and shift your weight distribution, develop technique, condition muscle, build strength, improve concentration and practice breathing control.
Free Sparring
Free sparring for children is the sport-based form of Taekwondo and is scored
using a point system based on striking to a restricted target area with protective
equipment worn, this is performed under semi-contact rules. In free-sparring,
students learn to develop mental approaches and apply the techniques and knowledge
they have learned in a free flowing sparring environment.
Pad Drills
Pad drills are techniques performed against a pad held by a Instructor or training
partner. They permit full-power techniques to be performed against a moving,
resisting object.
Fitness training.
Students will increase fitness and stamina performing exercises using their
own bodyweight and running drills with the emphasis on correct form, fitness
training is appropriate in intensity for the ages involved and athletic ability
increases the longer the child takes lessons.
All new students start slowly and progress at their own rate of speed. Most
children should begin by attending twice a week with each class lasting about
an hour, after a few lessons a child’s coordination will grow along with
the ability to defend themselves.
Children can be a little nervous but they will be in class with other beginners
just like themselves, the instructors will encourage students to help them overcome
